On Saturday July 24th, SHPE-NYC held its 4th Annual Summer BBQ Event. To keep with tradition, we held the event in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, NY. The area provides us plenty of room to setup our volleyball net, tables, and room for parking. Though the day was expected to hit temperatures in the triple digits, we provided plenty of fluids, great food, games, and setup canopies to ensure that all attendees could enjoy the festivities.
We continue to see SHPE-NYC members bring their family members and children to the event. Next year, we will plan activities specifically designated for the children who attend. You can see additional photos and videos from the event on our Facebook fan page at http://shpe-nyc.org/facebook.
We hope to see you at the 5th annual BBQ event in 2011!
Our July networking event was held at Iguanas in Midtown Manhattan, and consisted of over 50 attendees! This event was also an opportunity to highlight some of the SHPE-NYC members. We would like to announce the 2009-2010 SHPE-NYC Valued Members. These members have volunteered several hours for the organization, and have demonstrated time and time again their commitment to the success and growth of the organization. Each award recipient will receive a complimentary membership for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. This is the second year SHPE-NYC has distributed these awards.
This years recipients include Felsia Miranda, Gisela Camino, Mauricio Godoy and Theo Chan (not pictured).
We would also like to take a moment to thank a number of individuals for their overall support, feedback, and frequent event participation during the 2009-2010 fiscal year. These individuals include:
Tyrone Rodriguez, Pedro Cabezas, Rosa Ramos-Kwok, Fernando Rosario, Luis Varela, Patricia Ortiz, Jimmy Mena, Kelvin Corniel, Cathy Dumancela, Neil Weisenfeld, Eugene Garrison, Julio Maclay, Edwin Cabrera, and William Jimenez.
All of these individuals were mentioned and announced during the networking event. SHPE-NYC would again like to thank you all, and look forward to the 2010-2011 fiscal year, which began on July 1st. We received some live feedback during the event, and included it below.
SHPE-NYC along with Con Edison, and IEEE launched the first FE/PE preparation session with a succesful kick-off event that attracted 18 people, including at over 10 SHPE-NYC members. The event was held on June 30th at the Con Edison office in lower Manhattan.
Participants included engineers attempting to obtain the FE, electrical and mechanical PE's. The kick-off event was hosted by Neil Weisenfeld of Con Edison, and the agenda included a comprehensive overview of the requirements for both exams, and an initial dive into study tips and strategies. If you are interesting in participating in future FE/PE preparation events, please reach out to Pedro Perez-Cabezas at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is a follow-up post to the NSHMBA "Social Media's Night Out" event, where SHPE-NYC member Mauricio Godoy was an invited panelist. Below is an excerpt and photo from the Latinos at IBM blog which Mauricio maintains. There is also a link to the blog entry which contains additional media and details of the event.
The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) “Social Media’s Night Out” event united prolific bloggers with an audience eager to learn about leveraging the social web for personal branding and business. Among the night’s attendees were Monroe College alumni, current students, and staff.
This special event was appropriately held during the first ever World Wide Social Media Day on June 30th. After an excellent networking reception where professional blogs, Twitter pages, and Linkedin profiles where gladly exchanged, NSHMBA President Iveth Reynolds introduced a panel of guest speakers including social media consultants and entrepreneurs. ~Mauricio Godoy, Latinos at IBM
Each year the SHPE organization offers an intense, week long Management Growth Training (MGT) institute to SHPE members who apply. This year, a record high 66 applications were submitted, and a total of 35 were invited to attend. The SHPE-NYC organization is very proud to say that 8 of our very own members were invited to attend. The primary focus of MGT this year was preparation for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, where attendees earned all 35 credit hours required to take the PMP certification exam. This event was hosted by Hewlett Packard, and cost an attendee only a $200 registration fee, while the course itself was valued at $4500. Here is what some of the SHPE-NYC attendees had to say about MGT:
“The MGT has been the most enhancive training I've ever had. The attendants were very active and thanks to Phil and Barry Cordero's great job, the class was very dynamic.” “ ~Javier De Carlos Olazabal
“It was a very intense week, but very rewarding. An experience I will cherish for a long time.” ~Yajaira Arvelo “The PMP material was well-presented by Phil from Praizion Media. Barry Cordero also presented a workshop about achieving your goals and setting a personal mission statement.” ~David Solis
“In deepest gratitude, thank you for providing the medium in which to invest 5 days in my professional growth!!! It is truly priceless how you have empowered me to rise to the next level in my career!” ~Dora Maria Abreu
MGT is an intense and accelerated week of training. The attendees were given assignments prior to attending for preparation, and additional materials throughout the week. For future MGT 2011 applicants that are accepted, SHPE-NYC would like to host an “MGT Alumni” event, allowing future atttendees an opportunity to hear the experiences and advice of prior participants. MGT is held in the month of May, and the application procedure for MGT 2011 should start in the March/April 2011 timeframe. The MGT brochure is available for download here. For additional information or questions regarding MGT, you can contact SHPE-NYC at email@example.com.
